When or why undergo a scar correction?

Scars are visible skin irregularities that form after a wound has healed.

The appearance of a scar is determined by:

  • The type and size of the wound.
  • The individual’s tendency to form scars.

On average, it takes about a year for a scar to fully settle and begin to fade.

In some cases, however, scars can become keloid or hypertrophic. With keloid scars, the scar tissue grows beyond the edges of the original wound. These scars are often thick, red, or dark in color and can sometimes be sensitive.

The desire to remove scars can have both cosmetic and functional reasons, such as reducing discomfort caused by the scar.

How is a scar correction performed?

A scar correction can be done in different ways:

  1. Excision: This is a surgical procedure in which the scar is incised and re-stitched. This process creates a finer and less noticeable scar. Since the scar needs time to heal, multiple treatments are required, often taking more than a year.
  2. Medical needling: This technique stimulates the skin with tiny needles to promote collagen production. Collagen helps improve skin texture and fade the scar. We have very good experiences with this method. In Germany, medical needling is even reimbursed for the treatment of burn scars.

Both methods can deliver good results depending on the type of scar and the patient’s skin.

How much does a scar correction cost?

Since the price depends on many factors, such as the size and location of the scar, the final price and treatment method can only be determined after consultation.

  • The price for a medical excision of a scar starts from €1000 (including local anesthesia – sedation possible).
  • The price for medical needling of a scar is €250 for a package of 5 sessions of 10 minutes each.
  • Excision of skin tumors or moles: €300 per half hour, including local anesthesia.
