Your miraDry treatment - step by step
The miraDry device delivers precisely dosed thermal energy to generate heat in the area of the underarm sweat glands, effectively eliminating them. The treatment is performed under medical supervision.
Sweat-free in 3 steps:
#1 NUMBING
Before the procedure, local anesthesia is administered to the underarms by Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nelissen.
#2 MARKING
Next, a temporary adhesive tattoo is applied to the underarm.
#3 TREATMENT
Each part of the underarm is treated individually with multiple applications of the miraDry handpiece, which creates a vacuum and releases thermal energy to remove the sweat and odor glands. Throughout the entire procedure, your skin is cooled, ensuring you feel no pain.
What results can I expect from the miraDry treatment?
The results of the miraDry treatment are:
- Permanent: The sweat glands are permanently removed, resulting in lasting results.

How many miraDry treatments do I need? How soon will I notice results?
After just one treatment, you will notice significant results, including a reduction in both sweat and odor. For many patients, one treatment is already sufficient.
The final result usually becomes noticeable after 3 months, as the tissues will have fully healed by then. Only after this period can a second treatment be performed if necessary.
Official studies show that an optimal result of 82% sweat reduction is achieved after two treatments. Since results may vary from person to person, a second treatment may be needed for the best outcome. We offer this second treatment at a reduced rate of €1000 (instead of €1500), to be scheduled within 6 months and after consultation with Dr. Nelissen, based on a new sweat test.

FAQ MIRADRY - Frequently asked questions about miraDry and anti-sweat treatments
Do I not need the underarm sweat glands to regulate my body temperature?
Many people wonder whether the removal of sweat glands in the armpits during the miraDry treatment affects their ability to cool down.
While our body uses sweat glands to cool down, we have between 2 and 4 million sweat glands in total, with only about 2% located in the armpits. Removing this small amount (2%) has no impact on your body’s temperature regulation.
After the miraDry treatment, you’ll benefit from reduced perspiration in the armpits, while your body continues to sweat through the remaining sweat glands to regulate your body temperature.
Will I sweat more in other areas?
No, that doesn’t happen. The body has about 2 to 4 million sweat glands, with only 2% located in the underarms. Removing this small amount does not affect your body’s natural temperature regulation. Therefore, you won’t sweat more in other areas.
Does the miraDry treatment hurt?
The miraDry treatment is painless because the underarms are numbed beforehand and there is built-in cooling.
How long does the recovery take after a miraDry treatment? What are the side effects?
Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately.
However, you may experience swelling, sensitivity, and sometimes bruising in the underarm area for a few days.
You might also feel a tight, dry sensation in your underarms. This is completely normal and will go away on its own.
It’s also possible to experience a temporary change in sensation in the skin of your underarms and upper arms.
It’s recommended to move your arms frequently to stimulate blood circulation and promote healing. For this reason, you can also gently massage/knead the underarms (3 times a day).
Is it normal to sweat more in the armpits immediately after the treatment?
It is indeed possible that you may produce more sweat in the days following the treatment. This happens because some sweat is still trapped due to the swelling after the procedure. Once the swelling decreases, this excess fluid is released.
What are the aftercare instructions for the miraDry treatment?
The aftercare following a MiraDry treatment is relatively simple but important for a quick and comfortable recovery. Here are the main aspects of aftercare:
- Cooling: Immediately after the treatment, the treated area is cooled with ice packs to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Anti-inflammatory: After the local anesthesia wears off, you may experience mild pain, swelling, tenderness, or bruising. Using an anti-inflammatory can help alleviate any pain.
- Swelling and sensitivity: Swelling and sensitivity in the underarms can last from a few days to a week. Sometimes the swelling may last a little longer; this is normal.
- Hygiene: It is advised to keep the underarm areas clean after the treatment. You can shower, but avoid deodorant, hot baths, and excessive rubbing in the underarms during the first few days. You should also avoid shaving the treated area temporarily.
- Limited physical activity: Avoid intense physical activities like exercising or heavy physical exertion for at least a few days after the treatment to limit swelling and irritation.
- Arm movement: Although you should avoid strenuous activity, it is good to regularly move your arms to stimulate blood circulation and promote recovery. For this reason, you can also gently massage/press the underarms (3 times per day).
- Natural healing process: It is normal to experience a tight or dry feeling in the underarms for a few days to weeks. This will disappear naturally as your skin heals.
- Clothing choice: Wear loose clothing to prevent friction and irritation in the underarms.

MiraDry or muscle relaxant as an anti-sweat treatment?
An anti-sweat treatment is also possible with injections of muscle relaxants. This treatment is often perceived as more painful and has only a temporary result (6-9 months). The anti-sweat treatment with muscle relaxants is also more expensive (every half year €600 for both armpits).
