Why or when should you get a lip filler?
A lip filler can be done for the following reasons:
- creating subtly fuller lips
- accentuating the lip shape and the "Cupid's bow"
- correcting asymmetrical lips
- treating fine lines on the upper lip (known as "barcode" or "lipstick lines"): combination treatment with muscle relaxers and phenol peeling or medical needling
How long does the result of a lip filler last?
For filling and reshaping the lips, hyaluronic acid-based fillers are used.
The result of hyaluronic acid usually lasts between 4 to 12 months, depending on the product. After that, the treatment can be repeated.
How does a lip filler treatment work?
1. Preparation for lip filler
In the following cases, specific preparation is required before undergoing a filler treatment:
- Cold sores (herpes simplex): If you have ever had cold sores, it is important to take preventive medication beforehand. This helps prevent an outbreak during or after the treatment. Be sure to mention this when scheduling your appointment, so the appropriate precautions can be taken.
- Covid-19 vaccination: Avoid receiving a Covid-19 vaccination from 1 week before to 2 weeks after the filler treatment.
2. Your treatment
A lip filler treatment proceeds as follows:
1. Before the treatment:
- Photos are taken of the treatment area to clearly demonstrate the before and after difference.
- The lips are locally numbed with a numbing cream.
2. Treatment:
- The injection is done with an ultra-fine needle that also contains a numbing agent.
- During the treatment, you can watch the procedure with a mirror and indicate if the injected volume meets your expectations.
3. After the treatment
- After a lip filler treatment, you can immediately resume your daily activities.
- The treated skin may appear slightly red and swollen. This swelling will gradually subside. You can continue to cool the treated area.
- For the first few days after the treatment, avoid applying pressure to the treated area.
- Temporary bruising may also occur. These should be protected with a sunblock.
- Possible complications: With any injection, there is a risk of infection or an allergic reaction. Both risks are very minimal (less than 0.1%) and do not affect the result.
