What are fillers and skin boosters?

A filler is a volumizing substance that is injected (“injectable”) with the purpose of adding volume to the skin.

A skin booster is a filler with a collagen-stimulating agent that is injected to stimulate the production of natural collagen and elastin.

Fillers and skin boosters can improve wrinkles, folds, and facial contours, restoring your youthful, fresh appearance and the resilience of your skin. They provide an instant improvement, making you look better as soon as the filler is injected.

Not to be confused with muscle relaxant injections, which aim to relax muscles that cause wrinkles, such as crow’s feet. Click here for more information on the difference between a filler and a muscle relaxant.

Facts about fillers

What you definitely want to know about fillers:

Which wrinkles can be treated with filler and skin booster?

Fillers are used to fill wrinkles and enhance contours:

Types of fillers and skin boosters

We distinguish between:

  1. a collagen-stimulating filler (skin booster): adds volume and stimulates the body’s own production of collagen and elastin, making the effect last longer than a hyaluronic acid filler.
  2. a hyaluronic acid filler: only adds volume.
  3. a hybrid filler: combines both of the above fillers.
  4. Profhilo: does not add volume (only improves skin quality).

1. Filler with collagen stimulator – skin booster

Filler met collageen door Dr Nelissen

Collagen is essential for a beautiful, supple skin. Together with elastin and hyaluronic acid, it is one of the most important building blocks. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and is naturally produced.

However, from the age of 25, the natural production of collagen decreases, eventually leading to more collagen breakdown than production. This process is accelerated by factors such as UV radiation, smoking, and air pollution. As a result, wrinkles, sagging skin, loss of elasticity, and other visible signs of skin aging, such as an uneven skin texture or a dull complexion, start to appear.

A treatment with a skin booster (fillers with collagen stimulator) offers the following benefits:

1. Dual effect:

  • Adding volume: This filler immediately restores volume in areas such as the jawline and cheekbones, enhancing facial contours.
  • Stimulating natural collagen production: In addition to adding volume, this filler stimulates the natural production of collagen and elastin in the skin, reducing wrinkles and making the skin firmer and smoother. This skin-improving effect is not immediately visible; collagen production starts after about 4-6 weeks and continues for up to 6 months, ensuring that the effects of this filler last for at least one year (sometimes even two years).

2. Long-lasting effect:

  • The results typically last 9 to 12 months. This is due to the continuous stimulation of the body’s own collagen production, even after the filler has been broken down by the body.

3. Safety:

  • These fillers are biocompatible and biodegradable, meaning they are safely processed by the body and naturally broken down.

2. Filler with hyaluronic acid

filler met hyaluronzuur

Hyaluronic acid, known under various brand names, is used for treating wrinkle and crease formation due to aging or for lip augmentation.

Long-lasting effect: The results of hyaluronic acid typically last between 4 to 12 months, depending on the product. After that, the treatment can be repeated.

Safety: Hyaluronic acid is safe because it is fully biodegradable and non-allergenic.

3. Hybrid filler

Filler Dr Nelissen

A hybrid filler is a combination in one syringe of:

  • a filler with hyaluronic acid
  • a collagen-stimulating filler (skin booster) based on calcium hydroxylapatite.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Nelissen creates a customized combination of two different types of fillers, each with a unique effect.

How it works: By combining these two types of fillers, a synergy is created that results in a more natural and aesthetically pleasing outcome than using only hyaluronic acid fillers or only collagen stimulation. The skin feels fuller, more supple, firmer, and is better hydrated and lifted. This makes the hybrid filler an all-in-one solution for volume loss and skin rejuvenation.

Safety: Both components of the hybrid filler are fully biodegradable fillers that have been on the market for a long time.

4. Profhilo

Profhilo Dr Nelissen

Profhilo is a temporary hyaluronic acid that falls between a filler and a skin booster.

How does Profhilo work?
Profhilo is a treatment for bio-remodeling, stimulating the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. This results in firmer, tighter skin that looks more youthful and healthier.

It is important to understand that a Profhilo treatment does not add volume to the face or fill wrinkles.

Natural results without excessive volume:
With a Profhilo treatment, the skin supports its own healing process, leading to natural results without excessive volume.

Your filler-skinbooster treatment – step by step

1. Preparation

In the following cases, specific preparation is required before undergoing a filler treatment:

  1. Cold sores (herpes simplex): If you have ever had cold sores, it is important to take preventive medication beforehand. This helps to prevent an outbreak during or after the treatment. Make sure to mention this when booking your appointment so that the necessary precautions can be taken.
  2. Covid-19 vaccination: Avoid getting a Covid-19 vaccination in the period from 1 week before to 2 weeks after the filler treatment.

2. Your treatment

An anti-wrinkle treatment with a filler skin booster proceeds as follows:

1. Preparation:

  • Before the treatment, photos are taken of the treatment area to clearly demonstrate the difference before and after the procedure.
  • Depending on the area being treated, the zone may first be numbed locally.

2. Treatment:

  • The injection is performed with an ultra-thin needle.
  • During the treatment, you can watch in a mirror and indicate whether the injected volume meets your expectations.

3. After the treatment

  • After the filler – skin booster treatment, you can immediately resume your daily activities.
  • The treated skin may be slightly red and swollen. This swelling will gradually subside. You may also continue to cool the treated area.
  • For the first few days after the treatment, you should avoid applying pressure to the treated area.
  • Temporary bruising may also occur. These should be additionally protected with a sunblock.
  • Possible complications: With any injection, there is a risk of infection or allergic reaction. Both risks are very minimal (less than 0.1%) and do not affect the result.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, you can always contact us.

4. Check-up and touch-up

We advise patients to return for a check-up 2-4 months after the treatment to assess the extent to which the gel has broken down and new collagen has been produced. The breakdown of the gel and the production of collagen should be balanced after 1-3 months.

If the gel breaks down faster than collagen is produced, a touch-up treatment can provide a solution. The results will be even more long-lasting after the touch-up.
