What is a facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the visible signs of aging on the face and neck (neck lift). During a facelift, excess skin and fat are removed, and underlying muscles and tissues are tightened.

The goal is a fresher, more youthful appearance with smoother skin, fewer deep wrinkles, and a more defined jawline.

When or why consider a facelift?

A facelift aims to restore a more youthful appearance without completely altering your face.

The procedure reduces visible signs of aging by improving the jawline, cheek sagging, and deep wrinkles on the cheeks.

When contemplating a facelift, it’s important to have realistic expectations:

  • A facelift can bring significant improvement, but the longevity of the results depends on your lifestyle and genetic factors. No plastic surgery procedure can stop time.
  • For those who have never had intensive skin treatments (muscle relaxants, medical needling, medical peeling) and/or suffer from poor skin quality (such as smokers or those with extensive sun damage), a facelift is not a magical solution.

For a facelift, we typically schedule at least two consultations, preferably with a partner or trusted person. Sometimes, based on our assessment during the consultation, we may refer to a colleague plastic surgeon.

Prior to the facelift, treatment with muscle relaxing injections may be suggested for the upper third of the face. These injections help relax the muscles, which can contribute to easier recovery after the procedure.

What is a MACS lift?

A MACS lift, or “Minimal Access Cranial Suspension” is a less invasive facelift technique that focuses on lifting the lower two-thirds of the face.

With a small incision (“minimal access”), the tissues are lifted upward (“cranial”) and secured (“suspension”).

This method offers similar results to traditional facelifts but with a shorter recovery time.

What is a thread lift?

A thread lift is a minimally invasive technique performed without cutting and under local anesthesia. Special dissolvable (or sometimes non-dissolvable) suspension threads are placed to lift the tissues of the face.

The disadvantages of a thread lift are:

  • overly high expectations: A thread lift provides only partial improvement and cannot compare to the effect of a “real” facelift.
  • unwanted skin folds: In patients with very loose skin, a thread lift may create additional skin folds.
  • short-lasting results: The results of a thread lift typically last only 1 to 2 years, after which it must be repeated or a facelift should be considered.

For this reason, a thread lift is only worth considering for younger individuals or as a non-invasive refreshment after a real facelift.

Risks and complications

As with any surgery, there are potential risks associated with a facelift. Read more about the general complications that can occur with any surgical procedure. The possible risks and complications will be discussed during the consultation and are mentioned in the pre-operative documents.

Specific possible complications of a facelift include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Wound healing problems
  • Nerve damage
  • Paresis (muscle weakness) or paralysis

For smokers, wound healing may be impaired, and the wound may reopen. This can delay healing and lead to a less aesthetically pleasing scar. Therefore, we strongly recommend adhering to the mandatory smoking stop.
