What is an eyelid correction?
An eyelid correction, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat tissue around the eyes.
The goal is to achieve a natural, refreshed, open, and well-rested look.
This correction can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, potentially complemented with a brow lift for optimal results.
Eyelid surgeries are among the top 5 most performed procedures by Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nelissen.

Why or when should you have eyelid surgery?
An eyelid correction is performed for the following reasons:
- Drooping upper eyelids and/or overhanging eyebrows : when loose, sagging, or excess skin on the upper eyelids causes a tired, sad, or angry look, even after a good night’s sleep. This can limit the field of vision. Applying makeup becomes more difficult or doesn’t last as long (it disappears into the folds).
- Loose skin and fat deposits around the eyes: bags under the lower eyelids can cause a tired, unrefreshed appearance.
- Wrinkles and excess skin around the eyes: as we age, the skin around the eyes becomes saggy, and fine lines and folds form, which gives a non-youthful appearance. Sometimes "compensatory behavior" occurs: by constantly trying to raise the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles can form.
What is an eyebrow lift? When should you get a brow lift

A brow lift is a surgical procedure in which the eyebrows are lifted or raised.
This refreshes and rejuvenates the overall appearance of the face.
When a tired or sad look is present, the cause is often attributed to excess skin on the upper eyelids, which can typically be addressed with an upper eyelid correction.
However, in many cases, the cause of a tired or sorrowful appearance is also (partially) due to heavy, drooping eyebrows. In such situations, a brow lift (possibly combined with an eyelid correction) may be the optimal treatment.
It is crucial to seek advice from a plastic surgeon with specialized training and experience in both the surgical treatment of the entire facial anatomy and in combining eyelid corrections and brow lifts for the best result.

FAQ - frequently asked questions about eyelid surgery and brow lift
What is a Milanese eyelid correction?
A “Milanese eyelid correction” is a technique in which a wider piece of skin is removed during an upper eyelid surgery compared to the traditional method. This results in a more pronounced, beautiful contour of the upper eyelid, including the sides, and can help prevent the sagging of the eyebrows.
At what age can eyelid surgery be performed?
An eyelid correction is a suitable solution if you suffer from drooping eyelids, puffiness, or a tired appearance.
This is often caused by aging and the sagging of tissues, which can become noticeable around the age of 35.
How can I prepare for my eyelid surgery?
For this, we refer you to our separate page about the course of your treatment, where you can learn everything about all the steps of your treatment, from the initial consultation to follow-up appointments.
How long do I need to recover from eyelid surgery?
As with any surgery, the recovery process from eyelid surgery varies from person to person, but most people experience some swelling and bruising during the first few days after the procedure.
To promote smooth recovery, it is important to follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions carefully, such as:
- using cold compresses: this helps reduce swelling and bruising.
- avoiding strenuous physical activities for 1 to 2 weeks after the surgery.
By following these guidelines, you can contribute to a faster and more successful recovery.
To monitor healing properly, several follow-up appointments will be scheduled. All follow-up appointments are included in the price of the treatment. Dr. Nelissen is also always available to discuss and address any concerns patients may have during their recovery.
How long does it take before I can see the results of my eyelid surgery?
Most people notice a significant improvement in the appearance of their eyelids within a few weeks after eyelid surgery.
However, the final results may take several months to fully appear, as swelling gradually decreases and the tissues continue to heal.
It’s important to be patient during the recovery process and have realistic expectations about the final results. Follow your plastic surgeon’s advice and give your body the time it needs to fully recover for the best outcome.
What risks or complications are possible with eyelid surgery?
An eyelid correction with brow lift carries the same risks as any other surgery. Read more information here about potential side effects. The specific risks and possible complications will be explained during your consultation with the plastic surgeon.
Specifically for an eyelid correction, you should be aware of the following possible temporary side effects (risks):
- Skin discoloration (redness) and edema during the early healing phase
- Disruption of tear drainage (feeling of excessive tears or watery eyes) due to swelling (immediately after surgery on the lower eyelid)
- Redness and swelling of the eye sclera (the white part around the pupils)
- If you have any questions or issues with your vision, you should immediately contact the plastic surgeon or your own ophthalmologist.
When is an eyelid correction reimbursed or covered by the health insurance?
In some cases with medical indications (to be interpreted by the treating ophthalmologist), eyelid surgery may be reimbursed or covered by the health insurance. This typically concerns a very simple upper eyelid correction. Sometimes, an additional fee may be charged by the ophthalmologist, meaning the final price of the eyelid surgery will be similar to what you would pay with a plastic surgeon.
For purely aesthetic eyelid surgeries, where the best treatment is sought and, in addition to an upper eyelid correction, a lower eyelid correction and/or brow lift may also be performed, no reimbursement by the health insurance is available.
Where to have your eyelid surgery done? Who should perform your eyelid surgery?
Although eyelid surgery is sometimes performed by ophthalmologists or other medical specialists, Plastic Surgeon Dr. Marc Nelissen, with over 25 years of experience and regular international further training, offers the following benefits for this procedure:
Optimal treatment plan with focus on the entire area around the eyes
Don’t forget that the eyelids are part of the overall appearance of the face.
The big difference is that a plastic surgeon is not limited to just removing “some skin from the upper eyelids” (as with a reimbursed upper eyelid correction with an ophthalmologist or another specialist), but can improve the entire area around the eyes and the overall facial appearance by:
- Removing excess skin
- Removing excess fat and lifting sagging fat
- Possibly performing a brow lift (for drooping eyebrows)
- Possibly doing a deep phenol peel (for fine wrinkles around the eyes).
For a more complete and optimal result, eyelid surgery can also be combined with other treatments such as:
- Anti-wrinkle injections
- Medical peelings
Thorough knowledge of facial anatomy
Dr. Nelissen performs a thorough evaluation of your facial anatomy prior to the procedure to determine which treatment best suits your specific needs.
A drooping upper eyelid may, for example, also be the result of a sagging eyebrow, in which case a brow lift would be a better treatment. Unfortunately, we often see that a simple eyelid correction is performed by an ophthalmologist or specialist without considering the underlying cause, which only worsens the problem.
Surgery in our modern operating theater
Eyelid surgery is performed at the Global Care Clinic in our fully equipped operating room.
This offers significantly more guarantees in terms of safety, hygiene, and comfort than a procedure in a regular consultation or treatment room.
Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nelissen will create your personal treatment plan, taking not only the eyelids but also the eyebrows and the entire face into consideration for an optimal result.
Together with plastic surgeon Dr. Nelissen, the most suitable treatment for you will be determined:
- Upper eyelids and/or
- Lower eyelids and/or
- Eyebrow lift and/or
- Medical peeling and/or
- Anti-wrinkle injections

The kindness of the entire staff, including Dr. Nelissen, is truly visible and noticeable—it’s the clear hallmark of this clinic. Thank you to the whole team for this.
