What is a labia correction?
A labia correction, also called a labiaplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the shape or size of the labia is adjusted.
The most commonly performed correction is a labia reduction, where the labia minora (inner labia) are reduced because:
- they extend beyond the outer labia.
- one labium is longer than the other (asymmetry).
Depending on the patient’s specific wishes and needs, other treatment options can be discussed with the plastic surgeon.

Why or when should you get a labia correction?
A labiaplasty can address various aesthetic and/or functional issues, including:
- Pain or discomfort: when rotating or pulling the labia during physical activities such as cycling, sports, or sex.
- Shame: lower self-confidence due to the size or shape of the labia.
- Itching and irritation: caused by friction of the labia against clothing, which can lead to irritation or itching, making daily activities uncomfortable.
A labia correction, step by step
- A labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under sedation (relaxation sedative) in combination with local anesthesia. If desired, the procedure can also be done under general anesthesia.
- Preferably, zig-zag scars or a W-plasty technique are used, as these create less tension on the scar during healing. This is a better alternative than a straight-line scar, which may contract during the healing process and cause discomfort. The wound is closed with dissolvable sutures.
- After the surgery, swelling may occur, along with some bleeding. Bruising can also develop due to the numerous blood vessels in the labia. The first few days after the surgery may be painful and sensitive.
